Faith gives meaning to life. To determine the faith of a nation look to its institutions. The people, documents, institutions, educational establishments, courts, and halls of government will speak volumes regarding a nation’s faith and its religious commitment. What faith did America exhibit in its earliest days? Was it a faith in the pioneering spirit? The rugged individual? A reliance upon superior reasoning? Or was our nation’s faith founded upon eternal principles? Our forefathers looked beyond their own frail existence to the God who created heaven and earth. They saw the impossibility of accomplishing any task without a firm reliance upon the providence of the God of the Bible.
For generations the true story of America’s faith has been obscured by those who deny the providential work of God in history. The great “Political Textbook,” the Bible, has been ridiculed as an antiquated book of moralisms that has no meaning for our day. Our forefathers, the critics say, were mistaken about the so-called absolute principles of government set forth in the Bible. A new day has dawned in which the principles of the past must be cast aside to make room for the ideas of the future. Some historians even deny the Christian commitment of those who made this nation great. Modern textbooks, for the most part, omit the religious devotion of the men and women who settled this land. A deliberate attempt has been made to distort the facts of the past in order to manipulate the future. The doctrine of the so-called “separation of church and state” has been formulated on the basis of a rewriting of history. A wealth of historical evidence points to the fact that our forefathers knew nothing about an absolute separation as is being promoted by present-day court decisions.
What was the religious commitment—the faith—of our forefathers, the documents they penned, and the institutions they founded? In order properly to understand the religious motivation of our forefathers, it is necessary that we study the original documents themselves.
