How to Argue with a Liberal and Win!

Among the many pleasures that came with my joining the staff at American Vision in 2008, President Gary DeMar revealed to me dozens of boxes of books donated by a long-time supporter. Robert Metcalf and his Christian Studies Center had given a few thousand volumes to American Vision a few years prior, and these volumes needed sorting and stacking in our own libraries. It was almost like Christmas for a few hours each Friday as we opened boxes to see what books each held in store. We found many gems!

Haiti and the Guise of So-Called Christians

Liberals are suggesting that government support in Haiti is the best support to be found. On the contrary, tens of millions of dollars have been raised by private organizations that go far beyond the help the government is able to offer. Along with answering this misconception, Joel sets shallow Christians straight about God’s involvement in the events of Haiti.

How Capitalism Could Have Saved Haiti

Capitalism—generating the incentive and means to build stronger, sturdier buildings, even some with technologically advanced seismic-design (earthquake-proof) features—would have prevented tens (maybe hundreds) of thousands of deaths in Haiti. Jonah Goldberg writes, “If a similarly powerful earthquake were to hit much more densely populated San Francisco or Los Angeles, the death toll would be much [...]

Sider’s Ideal King

Christian socialist, Ronald J. Sider attempts to justify a socialist-style Welfare State by pointing to “the biblical materials that describe the ideal monarch.” Where does Scripture describe the “ideal monarch”? Sider says, “Both the royal psalms and the messianic prophecies shed light on this ideal ruler.” Sider then covers some typical Old Testament passages used by social-gospelers to make a connection between the king and “justice” for the poor. These include Psalm 72, Isaiah 11:1-4, 32:1-8, Jeremiah 22:15-16, and Ezekiel 34:23-24 among others. In my book, God versus Socialism: A Biblical Critique of the New Social Gospel, I respond to each of these mishandled passages and much, much more. In this article I will focus on just one of these favorite passages for Christian Socialists, Ezekiel 34:23-24.

John Calvin and Moral Law

What did John Calvin believe about the natural and moral law? Michael Horton has claimed that he and Calvin very much agree on the realm of heaven’s jurisdiction and man’s to bring order to a people, but Joel McDurmon begs to differ with Michael Horton.

The Only Christian Nation

Is there no single best way to run a country? Today’s host Joel McDurmon responds to a recent article by Michael Horton (under the pen name Knox Bucer-Beza) in Christianity Today magazine. Horton uses the works of John Calvin in an attempt to make the case that “Christendom is a contrived empire” rather than a [...]

A Perfect Hatred

One headline inveighs, “Anti-gay bigots plunge Africa into new era of hate crimes.” The article complains, “As far as gay rights are concerned, it would appear that much of Africa is going backwards.” Another headline: “In Uganda, a Hate That We Must Confront.” Yet another, “Hate begets hate.” There are many. In fact a Google News search (not a plain search, but a narrowed search specifically for news stories) for the words “Uganda” and “hate” turns up almost a hundred hits for just the past month.

What You Can Get Me for Christmas

The “wish list” used to be a holiday phenomenon. It is now actually an everyday feature of places like Amazon, Best Buy, etc. There is even a wishlist.com for building you personal list for every purpose from wedding gift and baby shower registries to everyday “I want” lists. I understand the practicality of this in some places, but at what point did the expectation of presents, and the virtual obligation of buying presents, become the central purpose of Christmas? Whether we admit it or not, this is what has happened, even for most Christians.
